28 Sep In the Spotlight: Retired Racehorse Project Sponsored Rider Jessica Bortner-Harris
About the Retired Racehorse Project
The Retired Racehorse Project was founded by Steuart Pittman and a devoted group of supporters, who felt strongly that Thoroughbred ex-racehorses were in need of advocates and educators in the sport and recreation riding world. RRP’s mission is to facilitate placement of Thoroughbred ex-racehorses in second careers by increasing demand for them in equestrian sports and serving the farms, trainers, and organizations that transition them. Enviro Equine & PET is proud of our involvement with this worthwhile project and currently sponsors four riders who are participating in 2017’s $100,000 Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium. The event takes place October 5-8 at the Kentucky Horse Park and involves 578 trainers working with Thoroughbred ex-racehorses that will have received less than 10 months of retraining. They will travel from 46 states and three countries, all hoping to be crowned America’s Most Wanted Thoroughbred.
Participants compete in Barrel Racing, Competitive Trails, Dressage, Eventing, Field Hunter, Freestyle, Polo, Show Hunter, Show Jumper, and Working Ranch. The top five scorers from each of the 10 disciplines will compete in the Covered Arena Finale, which takes place over the entire day, Saturday, October 7, and culminates with an evening celebration and the selection of fan-favorite America’s Most Wanted Thoroughbred. Sunday is Clinic Day at the Makeover. Spectators are welcome to audit for free as top trainers in each discipline instruct Makeover contestants.
At least half of the Thoroughbreds in this year’s Makeover will be offered for sale. Purchase prices last year averaged $8,000 with the highest going for $30,000. Buyers will have online and printed catalogues and opportunities to examine and ride horses at seller’s discretion.
Tickets for the Saturday, October 7 Thoroughbred Makeover Finale and Celebration can be purchased at RetiredRacehorseProject.org. They are $25 for the public and $15 for children and members of RRP. Tickets include dinner.
Introducing the first of our four sponsored riders in the RRP Spotlight:
Jessica Bortner-Harris is a successful advanced eventing rider, as well as the owner of JBH Eventing at Rocky Start Stables. She trained Whoop Whoop De Do as a part of the 2017 Retired Racehorse Project (RRP), and will compete on him at the finale event. Bortner-Harris relies on Enviro Equine products, including GastroBalance, ElectroBalance and OmegaBalance, to keep all of her horses looking and feeling healthy, regardless of age or job.
With the addition of the GastroBalance, ElectroBalance, and OmegaBalance to his diet, I am blown away by the difference in how Whoop Whoop De Do looks and feels.
“I have my BS degree in Equine and Equestrian Studies, so I have a pretty extensive knowledge of nutrition and the way the horse’s body works. I’ve always been a stickler for the way my horses are fed. I have a very good feeding program, but I felt like I was missing a puzzle piece. I have used all sorts of nutritional programs through the years, and I had thought I found what worked best. When it was suggested to me to try the Enviro Equine line, I was hesitant at first. I thought I didn’t want to fix what didn’t seem to be broken. However, all of the science behind the products sounded amazing, so I decided to take the plunge.
I have been nothing but impressed with these products and how they have helped my horses, especially my RRP horse, Whoop Whoop De Do. He has been a leggy, gangly dude since I got him last year as a 3-year-old. Everyone is constantly commenting on the fact that he looks like he’s always growing. My feeding and riding program helped him a lot, but I just couldn’t seem to get that last little bit of weight on him to make him completely filled out. With the addition of the GastroBalance, ElectroBalance, and OmegaBalance to his diet, I am blown away by the difference in how he looks and feels. He gained weight almost instantly with the addition of the Enviro Equine products, and I found that he seemed to be building muscle at a faster rate. The addition of the Vitamin E and Omegas to his diet really showed through in a lot of ways. He is shiny and happy and has a lot less soreness from working and building muscle.
I have all of my horses on the Enviro Equine products. Every one from the 25-year-old EPM survivor Thoroughbred to my 2-year-old homebred Hanoverian/TB are on the GastroBalance and OmegaBalance. They are all utilizing their feed better and look amazing. The four horses I have in the most work are also getting the ElectroBalance. As more of the youngsters get into working, they will be added on as well.
I am so thrilled with these products that I have stopped using ALL of my many gut supplements. I have one particularly difficult horse in the way of worry and gut stress. He was on daily supplements and two extra supplements when we traveled. Even with all of that, he did not eat breakfast at shows. He would only eat dinner once the show grounds quieted down at night. After starting him on the Enviro Equine nutritional program, I took him to a show 3 days later. I took all of the other stuff along, just in case, but I never had to use it. Not only was he calmer and happier, but he ate all of his meals all weekend. It was astounding.
I buy the giant sizes of all of the products, as I feed them to 9 horses. They are easy to use and quick to distribute. I know my feeding program by heart, so it’s quite easy to open the container and just scoop it out. Having a pump for the OmegaBalance gallon is also super helpful. If I am traveling to shows, I tend to scoop out what I will need for the time I’m gone into a smaller container. I find them easy to manage, and they haven’t lengthened my feeding time at all. If I am traveling, I do tend to double the dose of GastroBalance to help the horses deal with the stress of trailering and showing.
What’s not to like? The results speak for themselves. My horses have always looked good, but now, they look phenomenal. They love the products and gobble up every bite. They’re easy to feed. They allow the horses to utilize their feed better, so you can feed less. Their price points are all extremely competitive compared to other products that claim to do the same things, though I have not had the same results with them. I really can’t stop talking about how amazing these products are. I would recommend them to everyone with horses. Enviro Equine products will remain a huge part of my feeding program for long after RRP is over!”
